Description: A Sanitary Sewer Evaluation Survey (SSES) is a systematic engineering investigation designed to pinpoint specific defects and deterioration within a wastewater collection system. Many utilities struggle with excessive inflow and infiltration (I&I) and aging infrastructure, which overwhelm treatment plants, increase operating costs, and trigger regulatory violations. In this 1-hour webinar, attendees will learn how an SSES helps utilities to accurately identify structural failures, prioritize rehabilitation budgets, and implement targeted repairs that protect community health.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Identify common sources of inflow and infiltration within collection systems.

  • Describe standard field inspection methods, including flow monitoring, CCTV, smoke testing, and dye testing.

  • Explain the types of data collected in an SSES and the use of benchmarks

  • Analyze inspection data to prioritize critical system repairs and capital improvements.

Presenter: John Butler, P.E.,  Great Lakes Environmental Infrastructure Center
