Funding for water and wastewater projects can be confusing to navigate, and it is generally provided by a variety of agencies in a state. Some states have made an effort to consolidate funding entities and partner agencies to provide a singular point of contact for assistance to communities in their region. In this blog series, you will learn about some of the existing Water Advisory Committees in the country, what they are, who they bring together, how they operate, and what assistance they provide to their state. In this blog, we will give an overview of the Alaska Infrastructure Coordination Committee (AICC).

What is the Alaska Infrastructure Coordination Committee (AICC)?

The AICC is comprised of a group of non-profit, Tribal, academic, state and federal organizations working to connect Alaska communities with federal and state funding opportunities for infrastructure improvement. The AICC provides information on the evolving funding landscape and assists Alaska’s varied communities navigate the complexities of the funding sources available to them.

The AICC was conceived in 2020 by its members shortly after the passage of the American Rescue Plan Act. The formation of the Committee was initially intended to maximize the benefit of this “once in a generation” source of federal funding for Alaska, and then was further expanded to incorporate the funding provided through the subsequent Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act.

The AICC currently consists of 12 members who meet regularly throughout the year to collaborate and strengthen their program. The AICC represents a diverse group of Alaskans, including municipal, Tribal, and non-profit memebrs. The committee’s scope covers a broad range of infrastructure projects including water and wastewater, broadband, transportation, and energy.

Alaskan Infrastructure Development Symposium

The annual Alaska Infrastructure Development Symposium is an in-person opportunity for project managers and decision makers to meet face-to-face with federal and state funding sources and program administrators.

The Symposium is often co-hosted with members from Alaska’s Congressional Delegation and provides an opportunity for AICC members to learn about resources directly from funding agencies and share implementation updates with peers from across the state. Through networking, local project managers can meet face-to-face with funding agencies, ask questions, and obtain a variety of contacts that may have solutions to their infrastructure challenges. The annual symposium is held every spring in Anchorage, Alaska. Information about future events can be found on the Alaska Federal Funding website symposium page.

How to receive support

Communities in Alaska interested in applying for federal or state funding can refer to the Alaska Federal Funding website, and should keep an eye out for updates on the next Alaska Infrastructure Development Symposium. Municipalities in need of infrastructure projects or funding are encouraged to contact the Alaska Municipal League (AML). AML provides Alaska’s municipalities with a variety of resources to support their infrastructure needs, including grant writing, implementation, and compliance.
