Description: In the U.S., there are approximately 21.7 million households that rely on a septic system to treat wastewater. Unfortunately, 40% of these systems are estimated to be failing which can lead to impairment of pristine surface and groundwater sources threatening the health of wildlife, the environment, and humans who use these water sources. Septic systems, however, can perform at an optimal level with proper inspection and maintenance. This class will be of benefit to rural and tribal environmental and housing departments as it covers how to establish a robust inspection and maintenance program to ensure that household and community septic systems are properly inspected and maintained in a way that ensures environmental and public health. By the end of this training, attendees will be able to do the following:

• Identify common problems found during onsite wastewater inspections
• Describe how septic tanks and drain fields are inspected
• Explain how wastewater is treated in a septic system
• Analyze findings to develop a pumping schedule
