Description: Microplastic pollution is a growing global concern that has negative effects on both the environment and human health. In this seminar, Dr. Chunlei Fan explores how microplastics are distributed throughout the Chesapeake Bay and what that means for environmental risk.
During the summer of 2023, monthly surface water samples were collected from four locations across the Bay and were analyzed to better understand the amount, size, and types of microplastics present. Findings show that microplastic concentrations were higher than previously estimated, particularly among the smallest particles. These smaller microplastics may pose greater environmental and public health risks. Join us to better understand the growing impact of microplastics and what these findings could mean for water quality and public health.
Presenter: Dr. Chunlei Fan, Professor of Biology/Patuxent Environmental & Aquatic Research Laboratory, Morgan State University
