Many tribes provide safe drinking water at no direct charge to members and tribal businesses. As a result of ongoing drought and to help cover the expenses of running the water systems, tribes are just starting to plan and consider rate options to protect community health and maintain service. In this workshop you will:
- See specific examples of how tribal governments from around the country have structured their rates
- Learn how to determine the cost of providing water service, including future capital needs
- Develop objectives for the water system
- Structure rates that will give systems enough revenue to operate today and into the future
- Discuss the steps necessary to develop a communications plan to help reduce opposition and gain support to charge for water.
