Description: The United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) estimated in the year 2016 a capital investment of over $48 billion over a 20-year period to build stormwater infrastructure assets. However, in addition to the apparent need for long-term sustainability and maintenance of these assets, there is a notable deficit in the stormwater management workforce arena, especially relating to minority business participation.

This presentation will highlight the potential of establishing mentoring programs at the business level as a sustainable strategy for enhancing the capacity of minority businesses to competitively manage and maintain green infrastructure assets. To achieve this, the success of the Clean Water Partnership (CWP) Mentor-Protege program for green stormwater infrastructure in Prince George’s County, MD, USA, will be presented. Also, critical factors that foster effective mentoring dynamics and facilitate minority business participation will be discussed. Paying close attention to those critical success factors would be setting a precedent that will inform the implementation of similar mentoring programs by other municipalities across the Chesapeake Bay in the future.

Presenter: Dr. Bello Mahmud, Postdoctoral Fellow (Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering), Morgan State University
