Description: This course will cover nutrient removal operations in activated sludge and extended aeration wastewater treatment plants. Attendees will understand the most common purpose-built nutrient removal designs, environmental conditions for nitrogen and phosphorus removal, options for nutrient optimization at existing plants and leave with potential ideas for nutrient optimization at their own facilities.

This training will begin and end in the classroom and will include a Boise Water Renewal Services Plant Tour, hosted by plant staff, from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm. Followed by lunch from 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm (on your own). 

Please Note: Closed toe shoes are required for the plant tour. High visibility clothes and hard hats are also required and will be available to borrow. If you have vests and hats you prefer to use, please bring them for the site visit.

Learning Objectives: 

• If new to wastewater, gain a strong foundation of activated sludge treatment.
• Learn how to react to a loss of nitrification in a systematic manner.
• Gain a better understanding of the environments necessary for total nitrogen and total phosphorus removal.
• Understand processes within their own plant that may lead to release of phosphorus.
• Learn about the importance of preserving Biochemical Oxygen Demand for nutrient removal purposes.

CEUs: This course qualifies for 6 hours of wastewater continuing education credit in the state of Idaho. Attendees must self-submit their Certificate of Attendance to the Idaho DOPL.
