In this episode, we talk with Dr. Clare Pace, PhD, MPH, a postdoctoral researcher for the University of California, Berkeley Water Equity Science Shop (WESS). Dr. Pace shares insights about PFAS for small and rural water systems. Starting with the basics, we discuss what PFAS are, where they come from, known and unknown health risks, the current regulatory landscape for water and wastewater systems in the United States, and advice for water systems and policymakers who are thinking about PFAS.

Resources discussed in podcast:

  1. The Drinking Water Tool, a resource for water users in California that displays PFAS sources and water quality alongside sociodemographic information.
  2. The PFAS Exchange, an online resource center about PFAS contaminants in drinking water, which aims to help communities understand their exposures and take action to protect their health.
  3. PFAS Analytic Tools, a collection of data from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that can be used to evaluate what is known about PFAS manufacture, release, and occurrence in communities.
