Many operators are familiar with the theory of determining the solids concentration in activated sludge and performing related calculations, but it is not always in the scope of their duties to collect samples and perform the needed analysis to obtain that data. This video provides wastewater operators with a practical overview of determining solids concentrations in activated sludge using Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids (MLSS) and Mixed Liquor Volatile Suspended Solids (MLVSS). This is done by demonstrating the basic procedures used to collect, prepare, dry, and weigh samples and explains how the results are used to calculate MLSS and MLVSS concentrations.
Understanding solids concentration is an important part of activated sludge process control. Operators can use MLSS and MLVSS data to evaluate biological activity, monitor treatment performance, and make informed operational adjustments to maintain effective wastewater treatment.
We hope that after watching this video wastewater operators and trainees will develop a practical understanding of solids testing, calculations, and the role these measurements play in day-to-day activated sludge operation.
