Description: One of the largest financial challenges wastewater utilities encounter is finding the right balance for responding to both unexpected emergent issues and planning for future long-term needs. Due to limited resources, utilities are often forced to focus on reactive maintenance and needs, while proactive improvements are neglected. Capital Improvement Plans (CIP) are a useful tool for mapping out long-term investments in infrastructure and assets, reducing the need to operate in a purely reactive mode.

This training will introduce utility workers to the different components of a CIP, and provide practice in developing those sections. The SWEFC training includes activities for utility workers to practice practical skills used to evaluate their system assets, prioritize asset improvement activities and begin crafting a CIP around those assets, and demonstrations of the tools the SWEFC utilizes. Creating a useful CIP takes effort on the part of the system, but the result is increased resource efficiency and a road-map for the future.

Learning Objectives:

  • Introduce common CIP components
  • Practice developing CIP components
  • Learn to evaluate and prioritize assets
  • Understanding the steps to implementing a CIP

Please Note: This training will take place from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm, and include an hour long lunch break from 12:00 pm – 1:00.
