Description: Saltwater intrusion and rising chloride concentration is an increasing concern for many small drinking water systems in Delaware. It may affect drinking water quality, infrastructure, and long-term water supply reliability. This training will introduce participants to saltwater intrusion, the factors that increase system vulnerability, and practical approaches for monitoring chloride trends. Participants will learn how to interpret available water quality data, recognize early warning signs, and implement simple, low-cost monitoring practices to support proactive decision-making. The training will also highlight resources available through the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) and the Delaware Geological Survey, along with upcoming statewide saltwater intrusion mapping efforts.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the factors that increase a drinking water system's vulnerability to saltwater intrusion.
  • Interpret chloride trends and understand common causes of changing chloride concentrations.
  • Recognize chloride action thresholds and identify appropriate response actions.
  • Implement simple, low-cost sampling and monitoring protocols
  • Understand how monitoring data can support proactive asset management and reduce long-term infrastructure risks.
  • Become familiar with Delaware resources and guidance available to support saltwater intrusion monitoring and response.
