Description: This workshop provides attendees with an overview of the many types of treatment methods for drinking water. Topics discussed will include the steps taken for traditional surface water treatment, including coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration; methods for removal of dissolved contaminants; and alteration of water chemistry. An overview of drinking water disinfection will also be provided, with a focus on chlorine disinfection.

Training Objectives:

• Discuss the various purposes of drinking water treatment
• Provide an overview of the steps typically taken for surface water treatment
• Introduce attendees to the various other treatment methods, such as those that remove dissolved contaminants and methods to alter water chemistry for pH adjustment and corrosion control
• Discuss the general concepts and methods for disinfection, with a focus on chloring
• Provide information on water treatment that operators can utilize at their facility and help them pass certification exams

• Managers, owners, and operators of water systems serving less than 10,000 people
• Decision-makers for water utilities, including mayors, finance officers, utility managers, public works directors, city councilors, board members, tribal council members, and clerks
