Description: Wastewater surveillance has rapidly emerged as a powerful tool for monitoring public health and environmental exposures at the population level. By capturing aggregated biological and chemical signals from communities, wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) enables early detection of infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and emerging contaminants in a cost-effective and non-invasive manner. Integration of WBE data with advanced AI/ML models further enhances the ability to predict outbreak trends, identify hotspots, and inform timely public health interventions. However, challenges remain in standardizing sampling and detection methods, interpreting wastewater signals, and scaling infrastructure across diverse communities.

This presentation highlights recent advances in wastewater surveillance, emphasizing its role in One Health and equitable public health decision-making.

Presenter: Dr. Samendra Sherchan, Professor of Biotechnology and Environmental Sciences/Engineering, Morgan State University
