Description: Asset management includes five core components: level of service, current state of the assets, criticality, life cycle costing, and long-term funding. This course is intended for systems who have attended asset management training in the past or have started an asset management journey and are aware of the five core components. It will go beyond the basics of each of the core components to delve a little bit deeper. Because it is a relatively short training, it will focus on a few specific aspects of the asset management journey in each core component that will help systems move forward in their practice. The course will conclude with information on resources that will help systems implement asset management practice, including free, available asset management technical assistance.

_Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the importance of level of service goals and how to measure them.
  • Understand why a mission statement is helpful to a utility and how it can be used.
  • Explore the potential benefits of a computer program for asset inventory and a possible means of achieving that purchase, if desired.
  • Explore uses of criticality and how it can help in many other parts of asset management (e.g., repair/rehabilitate/replacement decisions, data gathering, and CIPs).
  • Attendees will be able to state the life cycle of an asset and understand the importance of the life cycle starting at planning.
  • Understand key aspects of long-term finances and where they can access outside funding.
  • Know where to seek help – including free resources and free technical assistance to help them on their asset management journey.

While all attendees are welcome, this workshop is most suited for attendees who have some understanding of the basics of asset management.

Please Note: This training is taking place from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM but includes a break from 2:30 – 3:00 PM.

Trainer: Heather Himmelberger, P.E., Director, Southwest Environmental Finance Center
