Understanding the Root Cause of a Problem

To registrar, please contact Meredith Perreault, maperrea@syr.edu. Phone:  315-443-3741

Some problems have one answer while others have multiple solutions and potential fixes. How do we know we are making the right choice? Understanding the root cause of a problem is the crucial first step in addressing the issue appropriately.

In this workshop, we will introduce and demonstrate two tools that will help community water system managers get to the root cause of a difficult problem. The first tool is a line of inquiry called “Five Why’s.” The second is using a method to examine the problem from different perspectives, called “PESTEL.” By using these tools, community water system managers can use a systemic decision-making approach to define the problem correctly, so they can apply the right solutions and create positive outcomes with their communities.
